ne of the ways that PeopleSoft is able to deliver the same application to any platform is by having its own data dictionary. Different database platforms structure their data dictionaries differently, and platform independence is an overriding principle in PeopleSoft. Except when building DDL scripts and performing audits, PeopleTools never interrogates the database s catalogue, but instead relies upon its own. PeopleTools is also a development environment, so it is necessary to have a way of defining a table before it is actually created in the database the PeopleSoft data dictionary serves this function. As introduced briefly in 1, a PeopleSoft database on any platform is usually described as having the following three sections, which are shown in Figure 4-1: The database catalogue, which is sometimes referred to as the data dictionary, describes all the objects in the database. The structure of the database s catalogue varies from platform to platform, but the concept is common to all. In Oracle, the catalogue is exposed through the underlying fixed objects (tab$, col$, etc.) and is visible in a more user-friendly format through views (DBA_TABLES, DBA_TAB_COLUMNS, etc.) The PeopleTools tables contain most of the source code for the PeopleSoft application. This includes certain tables that hold information about the structure of all the PeopleTools and application tables and their indexes. This subset is PeopleSoft s data dictionary. Application tables contain the users data. The PeopleTools tables and the Application tables all exist in the same database schema.

In table specifications, you can create columns, known as computed columns, that store no hard values, but instead store an expression that computes a value whenever the column is referred to by a query. The expression defining the column usually involves the values of one or more other columns in the current row or a server context variable. The following is a simple illustration:

The ability to construct formulae to specify search conditions for selecting sets, locating rows for updates and deletes, and applying rules to input is a fundamental characteristic of a query language. Expressions pervade SQL because they provide the algebra for inserting context into abstract stored data and delivering it as information. Expressions also play an important role in stripping context from input data.

Because application and PeopleTools tables are mixed up together in the same database schema, DBAs and developers often want to know which is which. In general, PeopleTools record names begin with PS , and the SQLTABLENAME is explicitly set in PSRECDEFN to be the same as the record name. PeopleTools records can be of any type. Application tables generally do not have their names overridden, the record name does not begin with PS , and so the table name is the record name prefixed with PS_ . However, there are some tables that do not follow this standard, and some tables are not quite PeopleTools tables and not quite application tables either. Table 4-1 shows some examples of different table names.

A WHERE clause in a statement sets the conditions for choosing rows for an output set or for targeting rows for searched operations (UPDATE, DELETE). Almost any column in a table can be targeted for a search expression in a WHERE clause. If a data item can be operated on by SQL, it can be tested. Recall that a search predicate is an assertion. Simple or complex assertions are the formulae we construct to specify the conditions that must be true for every row in the set that the main clause of our query is to operate on.
